Types of Hookah Explained
"Hookah" covers everything from an ornate traditional pipe to a sleek modern rig or a disposable e-hookah. Here are the main types you'll come across, and what each is good for.
Traditional hookahs
Egyptian and Syrian-style pipes with a wide, weighted base and a hand-finished stem. They look the part and give a smooth, classic session. Most lounges use a modern take on this style.
Modern hookahs
Stainless-steel and aluminium rigs with tighter engineering, better airflow and easy cleaning. Brands like Khalil Mamoon (traditional) and modern makers focus on bigger, cooler clouds.
Bowls: clay, phunnel and fruit
The bowl holds the shisha. A phunnel bowl keeps juices in for longer sessions; a traditional clay bowl is simpler. Some lounges carve a pineapple or melon into a fruit bowl — it adds a subtle sweetness and looks spectacular.
Electronic & tobacco-free
E-hookahs and herbal (tobacco-free) shisha skip the coals and, often, the nicotine. Handy where tobacco isn't available, though purists prefer the real thing.
