How to Set Up a Hookah at Home
Setting up a hookah at home is easy once you've done it once. Follow these steps for a smooth, flavourful session — the same fundamentals the best lounges use.
1. Fill the base
Add water until the stem sits about 2–3 cm below the surface. Too much water makes the draw hard; too little and the smoke isn't cooled. Adjust to taste.
2. Pack the bowl
Sprinkle the shisha in loosely — fluffy, not pressed — up to just below the rim. Don't overpack; the tobacco expands and needs airflow. Wipe the rim clean.
3. Foil or a heat-management device
Cover with a couple of layers of foil pulled tight and poke an even ring of holes, or use a heat-management device (like a Kaloud) for more control and less waste.
4. Coals and heat
Light natural coconut coals fully (they should glow orange all over) before placing them. Start with the coals near the edge, rotate them every 10–15 minutes, and remove one if it gets harsh. Let it heat a minute before the first draw.
